Don't be too cocky
Atlanta-Journal Constitution, 9/17/2000
Cockiness can sabotage your career. So says Turknett Leadership Group, an Atlanta-based management firm that coaches executives.
Executives who are bold mavericks are more likely to overrate their leadership skills compared with how their peers, subordinates and bosses rate them. The Turknett study had 15 subordinates, peers and superiors rate executives on 47 leadership behaviors.
"Accurate self-perceivers are better decision-makers," says Robert Turknett, the group's president. "Inaccurate self-perceivers are morel likely to deny problems and be blindslided."
