We have long known that children develop in characteristic ways through levels of development. What is relatively new is scientific research on how adults mature in their thinking across their life span. Determining what level of development we lead from determines how successful we will be in leading and developing others.

Accelerating Developmental Change

Using our research in Constructive Developmental Theory, we can show developmental maturity by identifying Leadership Levels. These Leadership Levels are developmental stages that leaders go through that define the ways in which they understand and make sense of their situations, relationships and themselves. The higher the Leadership Level, the more adequate they are at engaging in the behaviors that produce sustainable solutions in today’s complex business environment.

Leadership development using this approach can provide real developmental change in individuals and through them the organizations they serve. The process of facilitating real developmental change requires time and challenge. Turknett can work with individual leaders, high potentials, executive teams, or entire departmental teams. Participants build the awareness and the ability to unseat the status quo and grow as leaders to the next level. The approach is especially effective in situations where high-level leadership and a focus on the good of the organization are critical – for example, in mergers or in other times of rapid change.

For larger groups of high potential managers Turknett, along with our Lyceum partners, can offer an 18-month Lyceum process that provides state of the art development for your next generation of leaders. The Lyceum combines large and small group experiences, including work on actual business problems, along with individual and team coaching to build a cadre of leaders ready for the challenge of top leadership.
