Overview of the teambuilding process

Each team's requirements for teambuilding are different. No single method or agenda can meet the needs of every group. Therefore, our approach and the steps that follow must be considered as a proposed "process" as opposed to a fixed procedure. The program is always tailored to the team and the specific situation that it faces. The key elements of our approach involve: a full assessment of the team's objectives, style, strengths, and impact and a guided developmental process that helps a team identify and change factors impeding high team performance.

Steps in the process

1. Planning - Review with the team leader or with team members goals for team building and formal details of the team's composition, and begin to collaborate on the design.

2. Individual leadership development - This optional step provides individual assessment and developmental counseling for the team leader.

3. Interviews with team members - A series of interviews are conducted with team members (including the leader) to identify issues. The questions probe for problems and for opportunities to improve the functioning of the group internally and as part of the larger organization.

4. Analysis and program design - All assessment and interview data are analyzed and key themes, problems, and issues are identified. A specially tailored program is then designed to address the specific needs of the organization.

5. Teambuilding - The identified team can include up to l5 members. To meet objectives, a variety of methods can be employed:

  • Offsite sessions.
  • Private coaching of team members.
  • Facilitation of team meetings to demonstrate effective teamwork behaviors and give feedback on team performance.
  • Training in problem-solving and decision-making techniques, effective meetings, and other skills that will enhance team performance.

6. Follow-up - Additional meetings to follow up on commitments and to continue solidifying the team can be scheduled at regular intervals for maximum impact.
