Behavioral Lessons from the Awards: Research Findings from the Leadership Character Awards

Since 2003, the Turknett Leadership Group has been hosting the Leadership Character Awards. These awards aim to recognize and honor Georgia leaders who most embody leadership character through the qualities of Respect, Responsibility, and Integrity. Past recipients include Ralph de la Vega, former Vice Chairman of AT&T; Shan Cooper, former Chief Transformation Officer of WestRock; Milton Little, President United Way; and Yum Arnold, founder and CEO of Leapfrog. Our 2018 Advisory Board includes Ann Cramer, Senior Consultant Coxe Curry & Associates; Tom Crawford, Founder/Principal Crawford Corporate Coaching, former Chairman/CEO of Crawford & Company and 2007 Turknett Leadership Character Award winner; David Ratcliffe, Retired Chairman, President and CEO Southern Company; Conchita Robinson, President & CEO Robinson Associates, Inc.; Ann Stallard Senior Advisor Oxford Center for Entrepreneurs; and Dr. Betty Siegel, Advisor Emeritus President Emeritus and Endowed Chair of Leadership, Ethics and Character Kennesaw State University. After over 15 years of hosting these awards, we have collected a huge database of information about these leaders and their behaviors through the nomination process. Access to this data has allowed us to analyze, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the specific behaviors that make these leaders high in character. We are excited to announce that we have analyzed 197 leadership character nominations and have reported our findings in the following whitepaper: “Leadership Character Behaviors: Lessons from the Awards.” Click Here to Download It is our hope that leaders and organizations alike can use the findings to understand what behaviors are valued in high-character leaders, so that they can implement these findings into their own leadership styles. Our findings of behaviors span 10 categories, each with their own subcategories, ranging in scope and domain. However, they all have at least one thing in common: they were noticed, appreciated, and impactful among the people working closely with the leader. Indeed, they were so impactful that these colleagues took the time to nominate these leaders for their outstanding character. We hope you find value in our findings!
