Trust: Are You Building It or Busting it?

Trust is the glue of life. It’s the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the foundational principle that holds all relationships.

– Stephen R. Covey

It is also fragile…you have no doubt heard the saying that trust is like a mirror that once broken can never be put back together. Aren’t we all feeling a breach of trust these days? Trust that we could be together with friends and family and colleagues and not risk infection from a new virus, trust that the news we hear is real and accurate, even trust about ingredients in the foods we eat?

So how does trust fit in with the things that we as individuals CAN control? It is in the consistency of our actions…small things…that build trust over time. Sure there are flagrant breaches of trust that are clear trust busters, but the small things truly count as well. Do you tell people what they want to hear? Are you on time for meetings? Do you do what you say you are going to do? When you give your word that a task will be completed by a deadline, can people count on you to deliver?

In a time in our society where everything is suspect and we are fearful of what is around the next corner, how empowering to know that we have this ability to create our own zone of trust by our individual actions and the way we live our lives. In a word used so often at TLG and the foundation of the Leadership Character Model,  We hope that the thoughts in this newsletter around true leaders who lead with integrity are the strong link of trust that holds together a team, an organization, a society.st will resonate with you. Be the strong link…be a trust builder.
